Responsible Pet Parenting 101

Part of the mission statement for Second Chance Humane Society involves ‘Promoting Responsible Pet Parenting’.  The organization recognizes that this is a short phrase with big implications, as responsible pet parenting involves a broad array of actions and decisions, most of which your pet can not make for him/herself.  Let me preface with how Second Chance views its role here before elaborating on what it means.

Food for Thought

For today’s Pet Column I am going to discuss the behavioral issue of food guarding in dogs.  I want it to be clear that this is not a behavioral issue that I employ – but Second Chance Humane Society feels it an important topic to address as it is one of the more common types of aggression that dogs (not me) display.

Put Your Dog to Work

Hi my name is T-Bone and I am promoting myself not only as your new home companion but as your new work companion as well.  Not able to bring a furry companion to work?  Share this info with your boss and maybe that will change.  Don’t have a dog to take to work?  Well I have a solution for that too (tail wagging furiously…)!

Garfield Says - Adopt ME!

I was saying to myself just this morning, "Garfield," I said, "Garfield, you know what you need? You need a purr-son all your own." So I sat down to write this week’s Second Chance Humane Society Pet Column (and no, I was not asked to do so, whatever,  just keep reading).

Spay Your Mama!

It is kitten season.  I hate kitten season.  All the cute adorable fluffy homeless kittens coming in to Second Chance competing with cats like me for new families.   Yes, I am totally gorgeous and friendly – but I am an adult cat and my “she’s so cuuuute!” days are behind me.  So guess who gets more attention from adopters, them or me?  So what if my name is Princess, that does not mean I am being overly sensitive on this issue.
