Angel Ridge fits with Second Chances Needs and Vision

In a previous blog post I'd written about Second Chance's financial position and how we plan to fund the purchase of Angel Ridge Ranch. Hopefully that clearly demonstrated how we can afford this purchase, but please contact us with any further questions that you might have because today I'd like to write about how Second Chance, and the community we serve, cannot afford to miss this opportunity.
Those familiar with Angel Ridge are aware that is is a 52-acre parcel of land. For a few, the initial reaction is that that's a lot of land. Of course, that's true... the reality, however, is that Angel Ridge not only addresses a need, it fits with our long term vision for not just Second Chance but also that of our community.
The shelter at Second Chance has been located at 121 Sherman Street, in Ridgway Town Proper, for several years now and while our neighbors have been gracious, it's time for Second Chance to move on to a more suitable facility and space. Foremost, Angel Ridge offers us the ability to no longer have our animals crowding each other, to separate our cat and dog populations, and to provide our dogs more room to run and be dogs (than the tiny back yard abutting a restaurant does).
As far as how Angel Ridge fits our long term mission, Second Chance recognizes that among the most successful animal welfare organizations in the country are those that are near the population they serve and that have an appropriate amount of land. The reason that both these points are important is that land and proximity to people allow such organizations to develop a broad range of programs that do more than just shelter animals and that additionally focus on education and prevention. Land and space also offer a healthier environment for the pets we do shelter, and afford for greater interaction with volunteers, kids groups and potential adopters.
Our long term vision has always been to be a true resource for the community we serve. Angel Ridge will provide us with the capacity to develop into a more responsive community partner. We envision a day in which we offer more programs to the public that further foster a deep appreciation and respect for animals. Angel Ridge is the first step in making our vision a reality.
