Adoption Return Policy

Second Chance Humane Society strives to ensure that animals are matched with suitable adopters so that they can remain in their new homes for life. We understand, however, that there are certain circumstances in which the pet you brought home is just not working out. Our return policy for an adopter to return a pet is pretty straightforward. If you determine that the animal you have adopted is not a good match for your lifestyle or needs, then you have the option to return the animal for a full refund of the adoption fee if the return is made within thirty (30) days of the adoption date1. In addition, Second Chance is committed to each animal for life and if at any time during the life of the animal (and after the 30 days) you can no longer keep your adopted pet, we expect that you will return the animal to us, so that we can find the right home for him/her.

The return policy is as follows:

If after careful consideration you determine that the animal you adopted is not a good match for your lifestyle or needs, Second Chance Humane Society will offer a full refund for returns made within thirty (30) days of the adoption date.

If you decide not to accept the refund at the time of return then your adoption fee will be considered a donation and you will receive a receipt.

After adoption the Adopter is responsible for all vet costs that may occur. No exceptions. No vet costs are the responsibility of Second Chance Humane Society. One month free Sheltercare Insurance is included with the adoption when the Adopter provides us with an email address (please see your adoption packet for more details).

PLEASE NOTE: Animals are living creatures and as such cannot come with a guarantee of perfect health or behavior. Occasionally a condition or medical problem may exist that needs vet care, which is not obvious to the Humane Society while the animal is at the shelter. If something is discovered by your vet, and we were not aware of the problem or condition while the animal was at the shelter, we are not responsible for treatment costs.

If you adopt an animal that has a pre-existing condition(s) such as heartworms, upper respiratory (cats & dogs, etc) we are not responsible for any costs incurred for treatment of the pre-existing condition(s)2.

1 Please note that there are no refunds for items purchased from the retail store.
2 If an animal has a pre-existing condition(s) that Second Chance Humane Society is aware of at the time of adoption, the adopter will be informed of the pre-existing condition(s) at the time of adoption.
